Hospital de Sant Pau
When I studied in Barcelona two years ago, I lived just a hop, skip, and a leap away from this stunning piece of Catalan modernism architecture. However, most of the year it was being restored, preventing any good views and visits to the hospital. At last, the building re-opened during March 2014 and was free to the public for a few weeks before it began to charge admission.
Never in my life have I wanted to go to a hospital so badly! The functional part of the hospital is on the other side and separated by a wall, making Hospital de Sant Pau now purely a work of art. Designed by Catalan architec Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1901 and 1930, this hospital resembles a city within a city.
